Yes, she has dark, thick hair. Thick strands too. It's called a long shag. You can put it in a pony tail if you desire.

Razor cutting works best on hair that has a tightly packed cuticle, the more shiny the hair the better the end results will be, Also make sure you use a new sharp blade to prevent damaging the cuticle.

Yes the shape will work but your hair won't have the same fullness from the curls and it will look more like David Cassidy from The Partridge Family which is from the same era as Jim Morrison.

how long should each side be?
If your hair isn't super thick, I like for the sides to touch the bottom of the ear and then angle up to the shorter bang length. If your hair IS super think, you could undercut the sides and let the top fall over to give the same look without the thickness of the sides making the haircut look super round and bubbly.

Since my hairdresser switched to this new technique I feel like the became a bit more careful tho. If it possible that because of my very thick hair the results are better with the normal technique taking out a few 'hard lines' as you say? Because I like the look of having different hair locks, it makes it nonchalant and natural looking. Otherwise my hair is just 1 package.
Everyone's hair is different and some results require different techniques to achieve the end result you are looking for. Some curly hair will not react well to using the razor and a scissor is a preferred method. Make sure the blade is new for best results on thick hair.

Any tips if you are trying to do an only scissor cut
If you are only going to use scissors for this haircut, point cut every section in the same sectioning method you would use with the razor. The point cutting will keep the hair softer and move more freely than cutting the sections blunt. After you point cut the shape, use a scissor like the Jatai Tokyo Thinning Scissors to soften the shape and add internal softness to mimic the razor effect.
